First Impression of Iago Essay Example for Free

Early introduction of Iago Essay My early introduction of Iago is that he’s a manipulative and dishonest man who attempts to compensate for the absence of accomplishment and joy in his life by obliterating that of others. In Iago’s first appearance in the play, he’s seen controlling the affluent yet silly Roderigo into giving him cash. He professes to be taking this cash to purchase excessive endowments to charm Desdemona for Roderigo’s sake, yet he saves the cash for himself. â€Å"Iago, who hast had [Roderigo’s] tote/As if the strings were [his]† is plainly exploiting the desirous admirer of Desdemona (I. I. - 3). As Roderigo is taking steps to suffocate himself, Iago says to him, â€Å"If the/equalization of our lives had not one size of motivation to balance/another of erotic nature, the blood and evil of our/temperaments would direct us to most prepost’rous/conclusions† (I. iii. 325-329). This is deceptive of Iago since he is chiding Roderigo for letting feelings and wants assume control over his life, yet Iago lets rage, envious, and his hunger for vengeance assume control over his life. Because of the absence of bliss and accomplishment in his own life, Iago wants to pulverize that of others. When Cassio is elevated to lieutenant, Iago contrives to have him terminated by recommending that he’s having an unsanctioned romance with Desdemona. At the point when Othello weds Desdemona, Iago attempts to turn Brabantio against his new child in-law. Iago is discontent with his life †he doesn’t have the activity he needs, and his marriage isn’t a glad one †so he attempts to repay by making the lives of others hopeless too. Iago seems, by all accounts, to be an average scalawag whose plots are made trying to seek retribution on the heroes. His manipulative and double-dealing ways help hide his fiendish musings from the stupid Roderigo and over-confiding in Othello.

My Career as a Pharmacist

As indicated by the L.A. representative lead prosecutor who arraigned Winona Ryder for shoplifting in 2002, the whacked-out on-screen character was a mobile pharmacopeia. At the point when she was captured, Ryder was conveying eight (indeed, 8) unique sorts of painkillers and sedatives in her tote. Ryder demanded that she had remedies for everything except one of them. That was valid. She fail to make reference to, notwithstanding, that she had utilized a few fake names to get them (http://anecdotage.com/list. php?aid=17259). From this story, I come to acknowledge more the Great obligations of a drug specialist, one of our nearby legends where we endow the network and our family’s wellbeing. With the incredible arrangement realizing how a medication functions and what its piece to state its safe for human utilization were the couple of things picked up during the scholarly years. Be that as it may, for what reason did I pick this vocation, what is Doctor of drug store had to do with my lifetime objective? What will it take me to be effective with my picked decision of vocation? With the expanding number of school offering Pharmacy, applicants vieing for accessible seats are only not many confirmations that the vocation I have picked regardless of its unpredictability is more than the activity with various offers. It’s generously compensated and very much regarded in the field of medication. With the tremendous interest for drug store experts one need to think about the thorough prerequisites of turning into a Doctor of Pharmacy, an expert degree that needs earlier school level of study. For certain cases, individuals who completed a five years drug store degree may look for Pharm. D. In any case, this is only one stage of turning into an enrolled drug specialist, there still the readiness and finish of pre-drug store prerequisite, and after that the arrangement again for breezing through the licensure assessment. After these endeavors, it is presently advantageous that my fantasies and objectives are emerging, being a piece of a clinical medicinal services group, in contact with individuals for best medication and non-tranquilize treatment for specific sickness, sexual orientation and sex, as I can work inside a social insurance office or being basically a retailer. The nonstop modernization in medicate treatment that goes with advancement of innovation gives me greater fervor since it implied for the expanded interest for drug specialist. The work I am skilled in, my energy. In this season of present day advancements my vocation gives me a continuous excitement for development. Openness of drug stores assumes a key job in sedate dissemination during crises or basically looking for guidance for a specific medication, recommending the best medication without its symptoms. With the â€Å"war on drugs† among officials and pharmaceutical organization, I can dare to dream that open will profit, for less expensive conventional remedies. There might be developing rivalries in this field yet the energy and eagerness in me make a positive effect. I realize that quality and achievement don’t occur incidentally. An energy you need to do from beginning to end. In this way, every day I woke up I make sure that it is brimming with vitality and motivation, since I am meeting various individuals with various needs on prescriptions and the same. You don’t know whom the medication for and what’s in their heart that they convey. Recollect that being an enlisted Pharmacist doesn’t end on offering the correct clinical data and guidance yet carrying out a responsibility all around done is remaining the individual you are. Sharing a grin is something other than the best medication you propose to utilize yet the expectation you grant on their spirit. This makes my work and energy all the more fulfilling. How Exposure Therapy Works for OCD

While behavior therapies can be very effective, only two-thirds of patients complete treatment. Often, this occurs because patients are unwilling to experience the intense distress that can accompany an exposure exercise. In addition, and perhaps more importantly, many patients do not fully understand the rationale behind exposure-based treatments, and thus have trouble sticking with it when things get tough. Understanding exposure therapy can help improve its chance of success rate. Habituation:  The Backbone of Exposure Therapy Exposure-based treatments take advantage of a natural process called habituation. Habituation occurs when a person stops responding or paying attention to a stimulus, such as a thought, object, place, person or action, with repeated exposure. Everyday life is full of examples of habituation. For instance, when people first move to a new neighborhood, they may be aggravated by the noise of a busy highway that runs near their house. However, with each passing day, the noise from the highway fades into the background until it is no longer even noticed. In this example, the person has become habituated to the sound of the highway. Exposure-based behavior therapies work by promoting habituation to things that are feared by creating opportunities to unlearn dangerous or threatening associations. Avoidance Reinforces Fear At the same time, exposure-based therapies reduce avoidance, which reinforces fearful thoughts. This is important because avoiding things we are afraid of sends a very powerful message to our brains that there really is good reason to fear such things and that we do not have the skills to cope with them. Lets look at a practical example to see how exposure works to promote habituation. An Example of Avoidance Imagine that you have a fear of dogs. Now picture yourself on a sidewalk as someone approaches you with their dog. As the dog approaches your anxiety will start to rise. If you run away, your anxiety will subside immediately but you will be teaching yourself that you cannot handle dogs, that the distress dogs cause you is intolerable and that avoidance is the only way to stay safe. Avoidance would keep you stuck being afraid of dogs forever, as you would never get a chance to unlearn this fear and challenge these beliefs. An Example of Habituation On the other hand, if you did not run away but instead let the dog come up to you, your anxiety would likely get higher than you are used to, for longer than you are used to. However, with time, and provided the unlikely possibility that the dog did not bite you, your anxiety would decrease through the natural process of habituation. If you met this dog on the sidewalk every day for a month without incident, your brain would continue to unlearn its fear of dogs and your level of anxiety would decrease. At the same time, what distress you did experience would disappear more and more quickly. Eventually, you would feel no distress at all when encountering the dog. You might even enjoy spending time with him. In short, you would be habituated to the dog. Using Habituation and Exposure in Treatment for OCD Exposure exercises in behavior therapy for OCD operate on the same principles as those illustrated in the above example. Essentially, patients are exposed to feared objects, such as a contaminated door handle or fearful thoughts, like a loved one dying in a car crash, over and over again until their anxiety has decreased. Patients are prevented from engaging in rituals or compulsions during the exposure. Rituals are a form of avoidance that prevent you from unlearning your fear and realizing that you can, in fact, cope with the anxiety caused by obsessions. As you are repeatedly exposed to the thing you are afraid of and no negative consequences occur, your fear will begin to disappear. Exposure Therapy Takes Patience and Courage Of course, as in the example of the dog, such exposures require you to tolerate your anxiety being higher than you are used to, for longer than you are used to. However, once this short-term discomfort passes, in the long term your fear will subside and you will no longer need to engage in the rituals or avoidance that dominate your life. Exposure-based therapies offer a simple and effective way to reduce symptoms of OCD,  but they require courage and you have to be willing to give them a chance to work.

Act Of Congress 1890 Essay - 826 Words

Two Acts of Congress in 1890 The U.S. Congress passes an act that grants a pension to all wives of veterans who served in the American Civil War. On April 10, 1890, Friederike (Miko) Ruesse fills out an application to receive a widow’s pension. Her late husband, Johann Voss, had served during the war. Rike goes to Nashville, the county seat of Washington County, to see an attorney. Filling out a form, she swears to the following: â€Å"In the state of Illinois, county of Washington, on this April 10, 1890, personally appeared before me, Friederike Ruesse. No pension was granted for those who signed up for a 3-month duty. **Friederike cannot read or write. This may help to explain why many of the dates she provides are incorrect. John Voss died in 1873, not 1872, and she and Henry Ruesse married in 1874, not 1873. Her daughter, Elizabeth, is born in 1865, not 1868. Her son, George, is born not in 1872, but in 1871. Nevertheless, the documentation is accepted by the United States government and she is granted a widow’s pension. Analytical Philosophy The Law Of The Land As It s...

1. Analytical School Analytical jurisprudence is a method of legal study that concentrates on the logical structure of law, the meanings and uses of its concepts, and the formal terms and the modes of its operation. It draws on the resources of modern analytical philosophy to try to understand the nature of law. It is not concerned with the past stages of its evolution or its goodness or badness. The purpose is to analyse and discuss the law of the land as it’s exists today. It is a legal theory that draws on the resources of modern analytical philosophy to try to understand the nature of law. Although John Austin is considered the father of the school of analytical jurisprudence, the origins of this school of thought date back to the time of Jeremy Bentham (1748-1832). Bentham’s work has come into light recently is now known to be the founder of this approach. Austin owes a lot to Bentham as much of his work is just a â€Å"para-phrasing† of Bentham’s work. Concentrating on the presentation of character, setting and sound Essay Example For Students

Concentrating on the presentation of character, setting and sound Essay Concentrating on the presentation of character, setting and sound; examine what seems to you to be the most significant features of the Baz Luhrmann films you have studied. You should: * Consider the nature of Baz Luhrmann as a director, his aims and intentions. * Through an analysis of the opening scene of his text, Romeo and Juliet, consider how successful he is in achieving his goals * Move on to contrast this with Franco Zeffirellis text. * Review Lurhmanns techniques by examining his ideas in the film Strictly Ballroom in the light of what you know him as a director. * In your opinion, say how successful these directors have been by commenting on the texts you have studied Baz Luhrmann has been a director of many successful films so far but the ones we have studied, and the ones I will be using in this assignment are Strictly Ballroom and fundamentally, Romeo and Juliet. Before Baz Luhrmann began making the film, Romeo and Juliet, there were many things he had to think about and consider. His main aim was to not copy the original Shakespeare text, but change it enough just to make it a bit more modern. He wanted to update it to a 20th century style of film so it would appeal to more people today, especially a younger audience. A basic way of putting this would be to say he wanted to not change Shakespeare, but just allowing access to it; as to say he wanted to change certain things but keep the main story the same; where as Zeffirelli did not do this, he kept the same vision as Shakespeare initially would have but he was more original with camera work. For Luhrmann to change the film from the play in this way he had to keep certain things the same or, at least, similar. An example is the weaponry used. In his version, guns are used but they have brand names such as rapier, dagger and sword so there is still a connection to the original Shakespeare. This shows what he aimed to do and what he had to consider. When making this film Luhrmann posed the question How would Shakespeare make this movie if he was alive today? This explains what I have been talking about. Other things Luhrmann kept the same in the movie, which can be noticed from the first scene, are the language the characters used. This is actually the English of the time and the reason he left this was because if he decided to change it, the film would lose the idea that it is supposed to be a re-make of a Shakespeare play. Although the setting of the film was set in Verona the opening scene of the film was actually filmed in Mexico. The filming crew decided that they wanted to find a generic cityscape that was not well known so after touring around they found a gas station in Mexico city that seemed perfect. Luhrmann immediately decided that this could be where the two rival gangs meet as the setting was very modern and it would match Luhrmanns intentions of making the film seem to be staged in the 20th century. This scene was vital for the remainder of the film because if you were not going to enjoy this scene, you were not going to enjoy the rest of the film so it had to be made as exciting as possible. The gun fighting and comedy helped this to be possible. Ironically, this is exactly what Shakespeares audience enjoyed too so this shows why he decided to keep some things like this the same .u8c98ac5f7f7f91863433ba0af122d38f , .u8c98ac5f7f7f91863433ba0af122d38f .postImageUrl , .u8c98ac5f7f7f91863433ba0af122d38f .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u8c98ac5f7f7f91863433ba0af122d38f , .u8c98ac5f7f7f91863433ba0af122d38f:hover , .u8c98ac5f7f7f91863433ba0af122d38f:visited , .u8c98ac5f7f7f91863433ba0af122d38f:active { border:0!important; } .u8c98ac5f7f7f91863433ba0af122d38f .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u8c98ac5f7f7f91863433ba0af122d38f { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u8c98ac5f7f7f91863433ba0af122d38f:active , .u8c98ac5f7f7f91863433ba0af122d38f:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u8c98ac5f7f7f91863433ba0af122d38f .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u8c98ac5f7f7f91863433ba0af122d38f .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u8c98ac5f7f7f91863433ba0af122d38f .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u8c98ac5f7f7f91863433ba0af122d38f .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u8c98ac5f7f7f91863433ba0af122d38f:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u8c98ac5f7f7f91863433ba0af122d38f .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u8c98ac5f7f7f91863433ba0af122d38f .u8c98ac5f7f7f91863433ba0af122d38f-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u8c98ac5f7f7f91863433ba0af122d38f:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: An Inspector Calls EssayThe vision in this scene of the characters in particular; matches the image we get of them when we read the text. After writing the text for the play, Luhrmann had to think about what the characters are going to be like and how he was going to support the text with the visuals, as in costumes. The Capulets are dressed in Latino style clothing except for Tybalt, who is in-fact wearing dark, plain clothing. This is so because he is the King of Cats but also because he has a more evil side than the rest of his Capulets, as he hates the word peace. Therefore, as Luhrmann would have thought, a darker costume would, therefore, have suited him better. The Montagues however, are dressed in bright clothing. This is significant because we know that the Montagues and Capulets are rivals, but this is shown by the contrast in their appearance. Generally, Luhrmanns attempt to make the play similar, but updated is successful. The first impressions we get when watching it is that this is definitely a film based on the modern day. To find out it is a Shakespeare play however, it isnt exactly obvious, you will just have to know that Romeo and Juliet was originally a Shakespeare text as the, language cannot tell us exactly. However, if you do know where the play comes from, you are easily aware that it is a newer version of the Shakespeare text; not just a completely new movie. One of the main factors when making a movie in terms of presentation is the sound. In every single scene there will be at least 5 tracks of sound playing over each other at any one time. For examplein the scene where Romeo and Juliet are in the swimming pool there are 4 tracks playing, with just 2 people talking. There are the background sounds of crickets, the wind blowing, the ripples and sound of the water, and most importantly, the sounds of the two people talking. This makes you think how much work it would have taken to make the first scene with all the gun fighting, and car effects, and the characters shouting and people talking and screaming in the background etc. Luhrmann made this relevant to his fundamental task by obviously making the background sounds sound modern, cars running etc instead of horses; as in the older days. Franco Zeffirelli also made another version of Romeo and Juliet, again wanting to make it more modern, but he didnt modernize it quite as much as Luhrmann did. He used older style costumes, such as cloaks, and the characters generally act in a different way. For example, when the Capulet reacts to the Montague biting his thumb at him; he says do you bite your thumb at us sir? in a much calmer way then what he does in the Luhrmann version. (The difference here is the aggression between the two gangs. Although they are still rivals, they show it in different ways). A difference that can be noted in the first scene to show the difference in these two versions is when the Prince enters. In the Luhrmann version, he enters in a helicopter, using a megaphone etc. where as in the Zeffirelli version; he enters on horses, with trumpets and a fanfare. You can see from this example alone, the difference the two different plays show in forms of time. It shows that they both want to make the film for the 20th century audiences but Luhrmann is setting the film in the 20th century where as Zeffirelli is setting it in older days. Zeffirelli uses the same language, however, as Luhrmann. This is shown by the characters speaking in the movie but again, it is a thing that you can be made clear with in the all-important first scene. This is for the same reason as what Luhrmann did it; this is going to be a Shakespeare play and to make this so, you have to keep the language the same as it reflects upon the time of Shakespeare although you can still make a modern style film even by using this language. .u590b5beab378ffaa80d614024301a491 , .u590b5beab378ffaa80d614024301a491 .postImageUrl , .u590b5beab378ffaa80d614024301a491 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u590b5beab378ffaa80d614024301a491 , .u590b5beab378ffaa80d614024301a491:hover , .u590b5beab378ffaa80d614024301a491:visited , .u590b5beab378ffaa80d614024301a491:active { border:0!important; } .u590b5beab378ffaa80d614024301a491 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u590b5beab378ffaa80d614024301a491 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u590b5beab378ffaa80d614024301a491:active , .u590b5beab378ffaa80d614024301a491:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u590b5beab378ffaa80d614024301a491 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u590b5beab378ffaa80d614024301a491 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u590b5beab378ffaa80d614024301a491 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u590b5beab378ffaa80d614024301a491 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u590b5beab378ffaa80d614024301a491:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u590b5beab378ffaa80d614024301a491 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u590b5beab378ffaa80d614024301a491 .u590b5beab378ffaa80d614024301a491-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u590b5beab378ffaa80d614024301a491:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Dramatic texts are written to be performed EssayAnother film we have studied by Baz Luhrmann is Strictly Ballroom unlike from Romeo and Juliet in many ways; mainly because this is actually originally a Baz Luhrmann production, not like Romeo and Juliet, which was originally a Shakespearean text. Strictly Ballroom is, again, a modern day film based mainly on a dancing competition. It differs from Romeo and Juliet for this reason; for example, normal day language is used. It is difficult to see what his idea were when making this film as it is just a modern day film about people who contest to win a dancing competition. I think both of these directors have been successful in their own different ways Both have made copies of Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet and we can see they both take a different approach to it, they are both aiming for the same thing, but in different ways. Where as Luhrmann prefers the modern style, Zeffirelly prefers the old, when-it-was-made style. Although these two films look extremely different when watching them, the texts they use are very similar, if not the same, which shows they are similar ideas, as we know. Personally out of the two, I think that Luhrmanns version has been the biggest success. When Zeffirelli made his film, there isnt much change; it still seems the exact same Shakespeare play, which would not appeal to many people, including me. However, Luhrmann has taken the Shakespeare version and changed it in his own way (remember: allowing access) and made a different kind of film but still base on the same story. He has in fact, made the film (especially the first scene) quite enjoyable and fun to watch. One of the biggest factors of this is the comedy that was included in the first scene, which Zeffirelli failed to provide us with.

The Trade Deficit Causes and Solutions essays

The Trade Deficit Causes and Solutions essays There is a strong tendency among American politicians and economists to attempt to deal with issues and problems in isolation. Politicians take this approach because they apparent have difficulty dealing with complexity. Economists take this approach so that they can factor troublesome variables out of their equations. One result of the approach of treating issues and problems in isolation is the development of solutions that are ineffective when they are implemented in the real world where isolation from other factors is no longer an option. The tendency to deal with the issue of international trade in isolation has led to policies that tend to make the situation worse rather than better. The United States government (it makes little difference which administration is in control of the White House) likes to play the role of the world's policeman (and it likes to be involved in all disputes). This role is very expensive, but the United States government and United States taxpayers do not like to ask Americans to pay the bill in the form of a balanced budget. A balanced budget would require an increase in taxes, as there is just so much the Congress can squeeze out of services for the poor and the old without bringing the electorate down on them (Gale Therefore, the Congress and the President agree to pay the bill resulting from foreign policy by resorting to deficit spending. Deficit spending on a massive scale by the federal government places the government in direct competition with American businesses and American consumers in the capital markets. The government needs money to fund the budget deficit. American businesses need money to fund new projects. American consumers need money to buy new houses and cars. In the normal course of events, however, there is not enough capital to satisfy all of these needs when the federal government is a massive borr...

North Korea - Essay Example (Times). This is not the only example of how North Korean and its policies and actions have been unfairly treated by the U.S media This article clearly depicts the fallacious nature of the western media for one it only portrays the Asians as the villains and also it shows the reporters on bias towards the Americans, holding it till the end of the article to show that the Americans also failed to meet their end of the bargain. In recent times though the tone has changed because of the death of Kim Jon Ill, the media in the west have portrayed or at least started portraying a different North Korea to the public, for instance after the death of the Korean leader Bill O Reilly on fox news was quoted as saying that the whole country is faking the depression surrounding the leaders death, in one of the shows called Fox and friends, basically depicting the whole country as a major fraud and super imposing a negative characteristic on the entire population. Even in a recent article though it states that North Koreans Agree to Freeze Nuclear Work; U.S. to Give Aid, by Stephen Lee Myer published in February of this year, the underline tone of the press is very negative, the article states that The Obama administration called the steps â€Å"important, if limited.† Here it is plain to see that the White House, with the help of the press is showing a very unrelenting attitude towards the North Koreans. How Muslim Extremists Justify Interpretation Of Quran Religion Essay

How Muslim Extremists Justify Interpretation Of Quran Religion Essay There is often a lack of understanding as to what religion is. How do we define the word religion? Is religion a belief or merely a way of life? Genuine religion is fundamentally a search for meaning beyond materialism. A world religious tradition is a set of symbols and rituals, myths and stories, concepts and truth-claims, which a historical community believes gives ultimate meaning to life, via its connection to a transcendent beyond the natural order (Cited in Cline 2009: Introduction). As Cline has stated here, religion is a set of historical traditions which people adhere by and believe in. The Islamic faith for Muslims is not simply a religion but also a way of life for them and they are strongly attached to their own religion and culture. Some choose for their religion to be a private issue, whilst other prefers it to be the basis of all their social interactions. Muslims consider Islam to be a structure that takes in all aspects of life, both personal and social and it is a social, as well as legal system which governs matters such as family life, law and order, ethics, dress and cleanliness, as well as religious practice and observance (Hussain, El-Alami. eds., 2005:1). Muslims follow their traditional system however, the 9/11 and 7/7 terrorist attacks have had a large impact on how society see and treat Muslims and the Islamic faith, when in fact these extremists committing these offences are a minority group hiding behind certain banners under the veil of Islam. It has become apparent over the past decade that Islam seems to be a more militant faith than most others. Some people have been lead to believe that this is due to the Holy Scripture which holds all the laws of the Islamic religion, known as the Quran. However, the Islam faith is very diverse and varied and although many things in the Quran apply to mostly all Muslims, there are many other things which only apply to a minority group of Muslims, those who take their faith and inaccurate interpretations of the Quran to the extreme. In order to establish why these Muslims take their faith to the extreme, it is essential that the various verses from The Quran and the diverse justification of Jihad are firstly discussed. Jihad is a key problem in Islam as the meaning has many different interpretations. Jihad can be interpreted by some Muslims as the spiritual struggle against his or her own natural nature in order to lead a holy life (Bonney: 2004: xi), but for other Muslims like Osma Bin Laden, it may be interpreted as violent and extended to mean a commitment to Allah by all Muslims, to constantly strive to convert, defeat or overcome all non Muslims. Those who believe and follow the latter interpretation of Jihad, believe it is their duty to persist with the preachings of Islam through holy war, in an unjust way until the whole world accepts Islam or concedes to the Islamic faith. Bonney (2004: x) specifically states that those terrorists like Osma Bin Laden use an ancient, unfounded and misconstrued view of the Islamic perception of just war (Jihad) to exonerate their actions. The word Islam actually implies the meaning of peace and tolerance, but this reputation of Islam is being dented due to this wrongful interpretation of Jihad. Islam is a faith which believes that religion is to be freely accepted and by no means should be forced upon anyone and this is evident through many verses throughout The Quran. The Quran (26: 4) states that God wants people to choose their path themselves and does not at any point instruct any Muslim to raise a sword over a non Muslim in order to convert or subjugate them. In another verse from The Quran, it explicitly defines: Invite people of the path of your Rabba with what? With forces of the sword? No. With beautiful admonitions and advice (Quran: 16: 125). From this verse it is clear that many Muslim leaders, who have viewed Jihad as violent and as an obligation on individual believers with intent to destroy religious peace and pluralism in the name of Allah, are incorrect. There are many more verses within The Quran which specify that Islams idea of Jihad is not the idea of a holy war which these terrorist leaders have claimed it to be. With The Quran containing many verses stating the importance Islam gives to peace, (Quran: 4: 128) it signifies that the soul of Islam is in fact peace; again not war. Researchers such as Cook (2000) and Waines (2003)(cited: Bonney: 2004:47) as well as many others, both come to the same conclusion, that Jihads fundamental nature is that of defence, not war. Al-Qaeda claims to preach peace yet it also praises violence. The violent actions which are carried out from Al- Qaeda have resulted in innocent people being murdered and it has claimed to have been acting out in self defence against the imperialist intrusions of the West, but yet it approves suicide bombing. Suicide bombing is actually disobedience against established Muslim teachings. According to The Quran, the world is divided into two categories; believers and non-believers and it repeatedly states that the believers together form one people and the non-believers together structure another, (Bonney: 2000: 8) as in the believers are brethren of one another and those who disbelieve are friends of one another (Quran: 8: 72). This verse again is promoting peace and differences in belief are seen as Gods plan, it does not indicate that any Muslim should linger everlastingly at war with any nonbelievers but, for the world to be aware of Muhammad and his teachings, preaching is to be done. It is may be this verse in The Quran that Jihad in the name of Allah may merely mean a peaceful struggle through preachings. These rigorous and strict actions of Muslims who take their religion to the extreme have drawn attention to certain divisions within Islam known as Wahhabism and Salafiyya. Saudi Arabia is the birth place of Wahhabism and it is puritanical form of Sunni Islam. Saudi Arabia has always relied on a mixture of religion and political power. Its origins date back to the eighteenth century when an Islamic fundamentalist and extremist, Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab introduced a religious, political movement in agreeance with the local tribe chief, this was known as Wahhabism. The essential aim of Wahhabs reform movement was that every idea after the third century of the Muslim period should be abolished as it was false. For a Muslim to then be considered true to their faith, they must commit themselves exclusively and exactingly to the innovative beliefs set into the world by Muhammad. Ultimately, he encouraged a reinforcement of the original, pure and orthodox customs of the fundamentals of Is lam, as characterised in the Quran and in the life of the Prophet Muhammad. Today the term Wahhabism refers to a Sunni Islamic movement that pursues to cleanse Islam of any modifications or practices that diverge from the original teachings of Muhammad and his cohorts. The surfacing of Wahhabisms stern beliefs has resulted in conflict between other Muslim groups. As Wahhabism rejects Islams most prominent religious traditions, Wahhabis have found themselves in disagreements with non-Wahhabi Sunni Muslims, Shiite Muslims and non-Muslims in surrounding areas resulting in war. Since the attacks of September 11, 2001, the media have been inclined to centre their attentions on movements within the Muslim world that support and carry out acts of violence against other human beings and populations. The media refer to these terrorists by their religious group, but in fact these terrorist are hiding behind their religion, using the excuse that Allah or God tells them to act in this way. This is not necessarily true, as mentioned before the Quran promotes to live to a peaceful and coexistent life and it also has commandments and beliefs which are similar to the Christian community and The Bible. Those Muslims within the Islamic world who are dynamically working for peace, interreligious dialogue, minority rights and much more are overlooked. Organisations which are set up in order to reject violence are also disregarded yet such organisations and movements are the key to motivation and loyalty which inspires many Muslims throughout the world. These Muslims are moulding the foundations of the outlook and apparition of Muslims, and points in the correct direction that the majority of the Islamic community should be heading for. Those Muslims who participate in acts of violence and terrorism are isolated minorities within the Islamic faith, but this still tends to reflect of Islam and Muslims as a whole, with non-violent Muslims being judged unfairly and negatively by society. Since the 9/11 attack, many Muslims have received increased discrimination and racism by the rest of civilization. What people fail to understand is that these terrorist attacks were in fact carried out by a minority group of individuals who hide behind Islam as a faith to justify their violence by using a misinterpretation of the Quran. High levels of discrimination and racism are evident in schools were many Muslim boys are being stereotyped and associated with global terrorism, fundamentalism and urban rioting, resulting in them being identified as under-achieving and problematic pupils and they are becoming hot topics of social and educational debate (Archer:2003: 2). Muslims are in fact against terrorism, yet the acts of the terrorists cause the rest of society to naturally tarnish the rest of the Muslims wrongfully, with the same brush because the media and politicians refer to the terrorists by religious standing. It could be argued that these terrorists are extremists who are passionately seeking political power and wealth and it has been noted here that Muslims face complications not just within education, but also everyday life. Muslims are afraid to have their own say in politics as they feel discriminated against as a community as a whole (Banchoff: 2008:5). In conclusion, it is evident that jihad is a complicated occurrence in both theory and practice. Throughout the history of Islam, there has been no single concept applied to the meaning and there have been different definitions resulting in how jihad is practiced. It is also evident that Islam places a huge importance on peace and how one strives to lead the correct way by the will of God, and if need be, defend oneself. The minority group within Islam have taken this concept of defence to aid their own national interest and used it as to justify their violent actions, at the cost of the rest of the Islamic population. Islam has a genuine image of advocating peace and tolerance as well as the free will to choose your own faith, but they do believe in striving to preach in the name of Allah whether it is by pen, mouth media; yet again the extremists mentioned here use armies and violence to force their religion upon anyone. It does not mean to strive for individual, political or natio nal power. Word count: 2132

The Importance of Music Education Essay -- Music

Music, an extremely broad concept, is playing an increasingly vital role in the modern society, and most people today are experiencing music subconsciously. For instance, when walking in the street, not only will we see people listening to their music through all kinds of portable music players, but also hear people humming their favorite songs. When nightfall comes, young people usually go to concerts, whereas middle-aged people tend to choose symphony and opera. All the things mentioned above seem like nothing but entertainment. Does music exist just to please people? Apparently, the answer is no. In fact, music also brings people many significant benefits. Hence, music education is crucial to us, especially in our early development, and it should be a part of every child’s education. I think that music education can bring three benefits to us: enhance children’s memory, enrich their imagination, and improve academic performance. Human beings begin to learn many basic skills in order to survive after they are born. This requires people to grasp strong, stable, and rapid memory skills. Hence, babies’ expanding ability to memorize is an indispensable part of their cognitive development. Research shows that the development of memory in children becomes apparent within the first 2 to 3 years of a child’s life as they show significant advances in memory, and this enhancement continues into adolescence (Siegler). Therefore, we need to find out a way to help children develop appropriate memory skills. Music education is a terrific choice, and scientists do have evidence to support the hypothesis that music can improve human memory skills. Extended Kalman Filter Model for Gps and Indoor Positioning System

Extended Kalman Filter Model for GPS and Indoor Positioning System Long Kam-Kim Department of Telecommunications Engineering, Faculty of Electrical and Electronics Engineering HCM City University of Technology, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam Tuan Do-Hong Department of Telecommunications Engineering, Faculty of Electrical and Electronics Engineering HCM City University of Technology, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam Abstract – Object positioning is an old subject. It’s being used more and more in many areas, especially in military, traffic, social security and civil services. The most popular positioning system in the world is Global Positioning System (GPS). However, GPS has limited degree of accuracy for low priority users. This paper proposes a solution for solving these limitations by using Extended Kalman Filter (EKF). Moreover, GPS is almost invalid in indoor environments. The paper also introduces an indoor positioning system model based on GPS ideology and EKF algorithm. Beca use of the similarity in ideology, it’s easier for handoff procedure between outdoor and indoor environments and brings back the spatial continuous in positioning. The simulation results show that with the EKF, the accuracy of positioning is improved significantly in both outdoor and indoor environments. Keywords- GPS, Kalman filter, RFID, RSSI, EKF, indoor positioning. I. INTRODUCTION II. EKF MODEL FOR GPS Generally, Kalman algorithm is a group of mathematical equations described an efficient recurrence method for state estimation of process that it is optimal in the sense that it minimizes the estimated error covariance, when some presumed conditions are met [2]. EKF is an extension of Kalman filter for non-linear systems.A. Global Positioning System (GPS) In order to positioning, it requested that user’s receivers get signals from at least 4 GPS satellites. Distances between user and satellites are determined by using pseudorange code. At the same time, satellites an d receiver transmit a same pseudorange code. Because of propagation delay, signal received from satellites have phases delay than signal of receiver. By compared their phase, the distances can calculate. This method is called Time of Arrival (TOA). [1] B. Problem ExpressionPositioning based on GPS is affected by many noise sources, such as propagated errors, satellite and receiver caused errors, other errors from Selective Availability, dilution of precision, interference etc [1]. Several techniques are used to improve the accuracy of positioning in GPS, for example, DGPS (Differential GPS), Smart Antenna, Kalman Filter etc. This paper focuses on Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) solution, in order to introduce one way to model GPS system and sources of error. Nowadays, positioning applications in indoor environment are being extended.Especially, it becomes necessary in tunnels, supper huge plants, very high buildings, etc. The paper introduces a kind of Indoor Positioning System based o n GPS’s ideology and using EKF algorithm to help this system improve the accuracy of positioning. Assume that GPS system is tracking a mobile object. It is a uniform speed motion in 3D space with attendance of random acceleration events. GPS receiver puts on object updates its position continuously. However, the location is affected by measurement noises and propagation noises. Therefore, the calculating position and the real position are different. In order to improve the accuracy of position, we use EKF to model system and noises so that it diminishes the effect of noises. C. Modeling of system Defining the sate vector of system as follow: ? RX ( n ) ? ? RY ( n ) ? ? ? ? RZ ( n ) ? X (n) = ? ? ? VX ( n ) ? ?VY ( n ) ? ? ? ?VZ ( n ) ? where RX(n),RY(n),RZ(n) are coordinates of user at nth sample, VX(n), VY(n), VZ(n)) are x, y, z – components of user’s velocity at nth sample.Following [3], the characteristic equations for system can be extended as RX(n+1) = RX(n) + VX(n)T + ax(n)T 2 RY(n+1) = RY(n) + VY(n)T + ay(n)T 2 RZ(n+1) = RZ(n) + VZ(n)T + az(n)T 2 VX(n+1) = VX(n) + ax(n)T VY(n+1) = VY(n) + ay(n)T VZ(n+1) = VZ(n) + az(n)T (1) (2) (3) (4) where VX(n), VY(n), VZ(n)) are x, y, z – components of user’s velocity at nth sample, bf = ? bu/? t, dPRi is called delta-pseudorange correlated with user and ith satellite. [4] In order to reducing effect of errors, the EKF is used to model state noise vectors and measurement noise vectors. After characteristic matrixes are calculated, EKF iteration loops are started. The EKF algorithm will calculate estimation of the state vector by minimizing the estimated error covariance (between estimated values and real values). D. Simulation results for outdoor-EKF GPS Data for simulation on Matlab7. 8. 0(R2009a) †¢ †¢ †¢ User’s initial velocity: (3,6,2) meters/second Sampling rate: 1000 samples/second Iteration steps: 500 Process noise vector: W = 5* NORMRND (0, 500, 3, 1) Pr ocess noise variance: Q = 50* eye (3) Measurement noise vector: V = 5 * NORMRND (0, 500, 2, 1) Measurement noise variance: R = 50 * eye (2) (5) (6) here ax(n), ay(n), az(n) represent acceleration events at nth sample ( it is referred to state noises or process noises). According to [4], User’s positions are determined base on distances between user and four satellites. PRi= +bu, i=1,2,3,4 (7) †¢ Fig. 1 shows the simulation results for Lagrange iteration and EKF iteration compared with the true position values. In geographic coordinates, PRi is the distance between the user and the ith satellite, (SXi,SYi,SZi) are coordinates of ith satellite, (RX,RY,RZ) are coordinates of the user; bu=c. t with t is receiver clock offset compared to GPS time and c is the speed of light.PRis are determined by GPS’s receiver. Coordinates of satellites are obtained by decoding satellite report, while (RX, RY, RZ) and bu are unknowns. With system of equations (7) above, the root [RX,R Y,RZ,bu,] can be calculated by using Lagrange iteration [4]. However, measurement values PRi are affected by noises (measurement noises). Therefore the root of system of equations is not accuracy. After differentiating equations (7), we obtain dPRi = (RX ? SXi)? RX + (RY ? SYi)? RY + (RZ ? SZi)? RZ (RX ? SXi)2 + (RY ? SYi)2 + (RZ ? SZi)2 + ? bu = (RX ? SXi). VRX +(RY ? SYi). VRY +(RZ ?SZi). VRZ +bf PRi ? bu Figure 1. Based on GPS’s ideology, this paper introduces an indoor positioning model using EKF, called Indoor-EKF GPS. Indoor-EKF GPS is hoped that it makes over easier with GPS, in such a way, we just use a handle equipment to keep the continuous positioning while moving between indooroutdoor environments.I n Fig. 3, an arranged system of equipments in space can be recognized as pseudo-satellites. Indoor spaces are complicated environments for wave propagation. Distances between user and pseudo-satellites cannot be determined using TOA technique like in outdoor GPS. Here, TOA technique is replaced by RSS (Received Signal Strength) technique. This technique measures the path loss and calculates the distance between source and receiver. Figure 2. Errors in outdoor positioning. Red points: positioning errors without EKF. Green points: positioning errors in EKF model.Comments on simulation results: †¢ The maximum error is about 5 meters in case using EKF model, whereas 25 meters in case without EKF. Trajectory of user receiver in EKF model is closer to trajectory of user’s motion than trajectory of user receiver without EKF. The average estimation error of EKF is very small than without EKF case. However, several points in curve are under suddenly changing errors. Figure 3. INDOOR POSITIONING SYSTEM where ? 1 is called distance-power-gradient up to breakpoint distance dBP, Lo represents the path loss in decibels at one meter distance. The overall path los for any distance is modeled as [5] Indoor-EKF GPS Recent years, indoor environment has been extended so that indoor positioning demands are extended, too. Furthermore, it becomes necessary in tunnels, supper huge plants, very high buildings etc, and giving convenient for absent minder when household equipments are positioning. However, GPS is almost invalid in indoor environment. The reason is that GPS signal has low power. Even GPS signal can be received, the error positioning of GP S is not appropriate with Indoor applications. ?LFS (d ) +W, d ? dBP ? L(d ) = ? ? d ? ?LFS (dBP ) +10? 2 lg ? d ? +W, d > dBP ? BP ? ? (10) where ? 2 is distance-power-gradient over break-point distance dBP. It’s required at least four distances form user to pseudosatellites are determined for calculating the user’s coordinates. Fig. 4 shows calculation process for user position. Figure 6. The second model. Figure 4. User’s coordinates calculation.B. In the next section, the RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology will be used to implement this system. There are two implementation models: The first model: (Fig. 5) The RFID active chips are pseudo-satellites, and readers will be used as GPS’s receivers. Modeling of system Definition of the sate vector and the characteristic equations for system are similar with outdoor case above. However, because of difference on distances calculating method, equation (7) and equation (8) are not used here. This equation below is replaced equation (7) LPi=L0 + 10? lg (di) , i=1? 4 (11) here di is distance between user and ith pseudo-satellite, LPi is value of path loss on distance di. W appears as representative of noises and interferences. Here, we assume that it is Gaussian distribution, ? is distance-power-gradient (we have not examined its change yet. Here, we assume that it is constant). After differentiating equations (11), we obtain dLPi = Figure 5. The first model. 10? ( RX ? SRXi ). VX + ( RY ? SRYi). VY + ( RZ ? SRZi). VZ . ln10 di 2 + ? We imply that the values are taken at nth sample. C. Simulation results for indoor-EKF GPS Data for simulation on Matlab7. 8. 0(R2009a) The second model: (Fig. 8) The RFID active chips will be attached to users. Users will move in space that arranged with RFID readers. These readers will be connected to data fusion center. This center will determine user’s coordinates and send the result to user’s receiver by other channel link. †¢ †¢ †¢ User’s initial velocity: (1,2,1) meters/second Sampling rate: 1000 samples/second Iteration steps: 500 Process noise vector: W = 5* NORMRND (0, 120, 3, 1) Process noise variance: Q = 50* eye (3) †¢ Measurement noise vector: V = 5 * NORMRND (0, 0. 4, 2, 1) Measurement noise variance: R = eye (8) This simulation was repeated 100 times. †¢ The maximum error is about 0. 5 meters in case using EKF model, wh ereas 4. 5 meters in case without EKF.Trajectory of user receiver in EKF model is not closed to trajectory of user’s motion correlative with appreciably positioning error. However the error reduces very quickly by exponential curve. The average estimation error of EKF is very small than without EKF case. However, several points in curve are under suddenly changing errors. IV. CONCLUSION Fig. 7 shows the simulation results for Newton iteration and EKF iteration compared with the true position values. †¢ †¢ In positioning systems, the accuracy of positioning is very important. It must be appropriated with the positioning applications. The paper recommends one way to improve the accuracy of positioning using the EKF. The results of simulations show that the EKF reduce effect of noises on the accuracy of positioning significantly in both outdoor and indoor positioning systems. The Indoor-EKF GPS system is a suggestion model for the future indoor positioning. It is easy f or implementation and expansion, since RFID is very popular and cheap today. Moreover, the Indoor-EKF GPS system has the same structure with GPS system, wherefore the handle equipment can be designed to keep the continuous positioning while moving between indoor-outdoor environments.REFERENCES [1].
